What is the External Encoder Event Type?
External Encoder is a specialized event type that allows clients to use their own offsite production team while streaming through our platform. The client's production team streams directly to our Dashboard and web player, which then distributes to all connected destinations.
Available to certain PRO customers only at this time.
External Encoder Customer Setup Instructions
Follow these steps to successfully set up and manage your External Encoder event:
Step 1: Schedule Your Event
- Before you get started, you'll want to make sure that LiveControl has created a new location for you.
- Create your event in the Dashboard using the External Encoder event type
- Select the name of the location for this event type (for example: HHD Offsite)
Step 2: Start Your Event in the Dashboard
Timing is important: You can only start your event between 30 minutes before and 15 minutes after your scheduled start time.
- Navigate to: Event Schedule → Your Event → Gear Icon Menu → Start
- Click Start to activate your event
Step 3: Begin Streaming from Your Device
- Start streaming from your device using the provided stream key/server URL
- Your video will be visible to viewers immediately once you begin streaming
- Within a few seconds, your event will show as "Live" on the LiveControl Dashboard
Step 4: End Your Event
Important: You must manually end your event in two places:
- First: Go to LiveControl Dashboard → Event Schedule → Find your event → Gear Icon Menu → End Event
- Second: Stop streaming on your device
Step 5: Verify Event Completion
- Refresh your Dashboard to confirm the event has moved to "Past Events"
- If you have another event scheduled at the same HHD Offsite location, you can start streaming again within 15 minutes
Quick Reference Timeline
- 30 minutes before start time: Earliest you can press "Start" in Dashboard
- 15 minutes after start time: Latest you can press "Start" in Dashboard
- After ending: 15-minute buffer before next event at same location
